Tencent Headquarters Hall
Located in Shenzhen, the new Tencent HQ needed a welcoming hall that could represent the company’s essence: a simple yet sophisticated high-tech space, a place that encourages connectivity, encounters and meetings; a golden atmosphere that flows through the building and invites visitors to look up and connect with each other.
The main idea of Alain Bony was to create a striking contrast between the lower and the higher area of the hall to differentiate the public space from the private areas. The lobby was treated with cooler materials as stainless-steel plates for the walls and Carrara marble for the pavement finish, while three floors of corridors that intermediate with the offices were visually separated by a golden metal fabric which not only allowed some level of transparency but also the placement of several screens to display videos.
The contrast between the solid rectangular plates of the hall with the horizontal translucent lines of the cladding resembles the hardware and the software, seemingly opposing elements yet in need of one another to achieve connectivity. A smart building where technology travels through the walls to immerse the user into a digital universe. It is here where both worlds merge into one.
