International Commerce Center I

At night, the island of Hengqin sinks into darkness. A pitch black sky sets the perfect canvas for architectural lights to unveil. One by one, they switch on. While some may just illuminate, there is one that stands out, far more delicate than flashes of neon, yet more potent. It is the halo of light that surrounds the International Commerce Center’s façade.

The aim of Alain Bony was to convey a feeling of calmness and relaxation in the middle of the hectic metropolis of Zhuhai, creating a subtle movement like the one emitted by the light of a candle. To achieve this, colored panels were incorporated throughout the facades of both buildings. Like a burning flame, cold and warm tones flicker creating a progressive degrade.

Due to the curved morphology of the buildings, some colors disappear and others stand out, depending on the angle at which the observer is. This perspective effect adds dynamism and movement to the façade. The architectural intervention not only plays an important role by nightfall lighting the way, but also during the day, becoming part of the urban landscape.
